Few movies about fashion are as entertaining, or as brilliantly played as The Devil Wears Prada. This movie, made in 2006, stars the magnificent Meryl Streep. Few women have ever come across the silver screen with the presence and the performance of Meryl Streep. What was once rumored to be the part of Kim Basinger or Helen Mirren, went to a women only too good to play her anything but perfect.
The movie, set in New York City, was based on the bestselling book. It stars Anne Hathaway as an aspiring journalist that gets wrapped up in her job and the world of high fashion. Her boss, Miranda Preistly, is one of the most powerful women in the world and it’s Hathways job to make her happy no matter what the cost.
The movie, brilliant in it’s production, is an exploration into the high world of fashion and the ruthless people who run it. It paints fashion as a cutthroat field and one where you are more likely to get stabbed in the back before you will be patted on it.
The movies main character Miranda, is based on the Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. She exemplifies the fast paced nature of the fashion world. Perhaps it is that aspect alone that is so fascinating about the movie. It’s about how it proves that fashion has a place in everyone’s life. Even those that think the rules of fashion don’t apply to them, still must be influenced in some way, shape, or form to be wearing the clothes they are wearing now. In one pivotal scene early in the movie, Miranda dresses down Andy for the sweater she was wearing. She goes on to prove that it is people like her that are responsible for the color of sweater she is wearing. The movie takes a fascinating look at the fashion industry as Meryl Streep gives the performance of a lifetime.
