The life of a designer in Hollywood is anything but easy. These days there is an increasingly bigger eye on what people are wearing and what they shouldn’t be wearing. It’s one thing to be the maker of the hottest dress on the red carpet. It’s another thing to be known as the maker of the huge fashion mishap on the red carpet. A few bad association with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and it could spell curtains for their career on the fashion runway.
The key for any fashion designer is simply consistency of clients and consistency of a vision. The people who line the red carpet are not the same. One celebrity has a more outlandish personality, while the other celebrity is more elegant and regal. Knowing this and creating styles that will fit them individually as the key. The style of a designer must be adaptable to the client they have.
Of course designing for anyone who will walk the red carpet comes with an inherent risk. If a designer makes a dress for a proclaimed sex vixen, and they decide to make some minor alterations to the dress than they might find themselves in the midst of a red carpet backlash. There will be fashion police calling the dress a wreck or saying it didn’t look good for them. As a designer they have to be able to understand that these things will happen and continue to make clothes that are in the best interest of their own personal vision and the vision of their customer.
Of course, there is an easier way to deal with the problems of having a celebrity that might not represent the designs to their best capabilities. That would simply be to not design for them. It is ok to say no if it will ensure that designs and reputation stay in tact.
