There is a growing trend in Hollywood these days when it comes to the way celebrities market themselves. Back in the day celebs with a relative amount of fame would take their good name and use it in an advertisement for a company. Many can look back to the Pepsi ads of the 1980’s and 1990’s that featured such stars as Michael Jackson, Cindy Crawford, and Michael J. Fox.

These days, however, the is a new way for celebrities to market themselves. They are becoming fashion designers and pitch people for clothing campaigns. This is a big market that more and more celebrities are becoming a part of. Bigger celebrities like Brad Pitt and Sarah Jessica Parker have had their own clothing lines, while even reality television stars have started to get into the game as well.

Part of the reason for the sudden jump into the world of fashion has to do with the increasing importance on the clothes the starts wear. Magazines are plastered with critiques of outfits and pictures from A list events. Men and women in Hollywood are making their reputation and their celebrity on the way they come off on the red carpet. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for these new fashion icons to attempt to capitalize off their style.

It’s easy for the clothing companies to make the jump. The celebrities they collaborate with are already out there advertising the product by wearing it to high profile events. Once they get the name of the line out there it’s a relatively simple plan of putting it in stores.

These stars have varying degrees of success. Perhaps the star most known for their jump into the clothing market is cyclist Lance Armstrong. His clothing line, Livestrong, is one of the more popular workout clothing brands. Still, Armstrong is one of the few true successes in the fashion industry. It’s not uncommon to have a flop or two along the way.
